Complaining about the weather is pretty damn boring, but this has been a hard spring to enjoy: a snow-piled April, one of the foggiest Mays in years, and a rainy June. When the skies opened just as Dan Deacon was set to take the stage at Rock the Garden, it seemed like the icing on the cake of this miserable season. Unexpectedly, though, the event turned into a triumph: top to bottom, the annual event’s most memorable installment in recent memory.

I had, as we say in Minnesota, a heckuva good time taking photos and drinking Summit at Rock the Garden yesterday.

When I see Metric at Rock the Garden today, I’ll knock an artist off my top ten most-listened-but-haven’t-seen live list. Here’s how the list stands now:

The Replacements

New Pornographers
Belle and Sebastian
Metric

Metric will make room for Radiohead to join the list at #10. Talking Heads and the Smiths would also be on there, but I’ve put those on the “unattainable” list. The Replacements also used to be on that list…but apparently no longer!

(Yes, since joining Last.fm in 2007 I’ve listened to more Lana Del Rey than David Bowie, Tom Waits, the Replacements, or Radiohead. No shame.)

According to a seemingly British flamer filling the artsorbit ask box, the only explanation for the “shocking” lack of taste displayed by my negative review of Man of Steel is that living in Minnesota has drained all the joy from my life.

Your band may not be able to make a living right away, but you could work in the industry and eventually your band starts to make a name for themselves and you don’t have to do that other job anymore. Learning about the industry and working within the infrastructure I think is one of the smartest things people can do.”
