When I was in kindergarten and first grade, I loved the Ed Emberley color-themed drawing books. They’d start with simple pictures and increase in difficulty to something fantastically detailed like—as in the Big Purple Drawing Book, from which these drawings were made—a pirate ship.

These drawings are clearly dated 1990, though; the year I turned 15. (Notice the slashed zeroes and “J.W.A. Gabler” signature, evidence of my interest in computer programming and my confirmation name respectively.) It must have been a brief nostalgic return to a simpler, purpler time.
